Remediation Works Contractor - Land Remediation of General Waste at Maralinga and Emu Field SA
A land remediation project of general buried and surface waste, comprising mainly metals, glass and asbestos, at the former British atomic weapons test sites - Maralinga and Emu Field, in South Australia. The waste and contaminated soil locations are identified and comprise approximately 120 pits (to be excavated to 1 metre depth) and areas of surface waste.
The project is located in a remote area of South Australia and will involve the collection and reburial of contaminated and non-recyclable waste in an on-site consolidated burial cell, and the removal off-site of recyclable waste.
It is expected the on-site land remediation works would occur in 2025.
Estimated volume of buried and surface general waste is:
· Maralinga: Recyclable: 8,100 m3, Contaminated and Non-recyclable: 3,729 m3.
· Emu Field: Recyclable: 1,179 m3, Contaminated and Non-recyclable: 501 m3.
The land is owned by Maralinga Tjarutja and as such is not Commonwealth land. SA laws will apply to the project, in particular town planning development approvals.
